Verdict

One Dark Window is a gothic fantasy novel written by Rachel Gillig and published in 2022.

I originally found the novel while browsing a local Barnes & Noble. When looking around, covers tend to jump out to me first. Not only is the first printing's cover stunning, the plot hook is perfectly mysterious.

A main character with a monster in her head? Magic with consequences? Potential treason? Sign me up!

She calls him the Nightmare, an ancient, mercurial spirit trapped in her head.

From the back cover synopsis.

I finished One Dark Window in under three working days. I thought about the book on shift while in the midst of reading, and I have yet to stop thinking about the book since finishing. To say I am waiting for the release of Two Twisted Crowns on October 17th is a massive understatement.

I often get overwhelmed by new fantasy worlds. The gradual unwravelling of Gillig's worldbuilding was beautiful to experience and not overwhelming in the slightest.

The cast of characters are all relatable and realistic. I enjoy being immersed in a character's perspective. Seeing everyone from Elspeth's eyes made me love and understand their motives, personalities, and reactions to the events of the story.

The book hooked me from the start, and the ending stuck with me. As a lead into the sequel, it works to keep a waiting reader on the edge of their seat, awaiting the new release. Gillig is a masterful author.

Please read One Dark Window if you can! It is absolutely worth the time.
